Effective First Impression Tips for an Interview

5/4/2012

First impressions leave a lasting impact, and can make or break your success with an organization. Though you might make a great virtual impression through your resume or social networks, not much can challenge the in-person interview. The first interview provides you with the opportunity to shine, and highlight your experience or skills. Here are some recommendations that will help you leave an effective first impression for your interview:

  • Make sure you know the location of the interview. In case your GPS provides wrong directions or automatically shuts off, it is beneficial to write down the address or have an idea of the interview location. If you are unsure of the location, take a drive to the address a few days before.
  • Be early for the interview. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment
  • Do your homework and research. Read and learn about as much of the company as you can. What is the company’s mission? Who are some of the key employees? How and when was the company founded? What are some recent achievements or goals?
  • Come prepared. Print out extra copies of your cover letter, resume or references. Bring a notebook and pen to take notes as the interview progresses
  • Keep your cell phone off or in the car. It would be unprofessional, plus embarrassing, if your cell phone rang in the middle of your interview. Though this is a small thing, it emphasizes you may not take the interview seriously
  • Offer a greeting, firm handshake and smile when you meet your interviewers the first time
  • Answer questions that you are asked honestly and clearly. If the interviewer asks if you have any questions, it’s OK to ask
  • Do not inquire about benefits or the job salary. This topic should only appear after you have been offered a position in the company
  • Send a thank-you note to those that interviewed you
